Having a conversation with a friend recently, we discussed the pros and cons of growing up in typical Baptist homes located within a strong Catholic community. The subject came up of whether or not we felt we really KNEW God or carried a distant picture of him in our minds. It is so easy when you are raised with God to rely on what you are taught rather than finding him yourself. A few weeks after the discussion she was doing a bible study at church and the question posed referred to the attributes of God. She and I discussed at length how having grown up in church and every aspects of our lives being engulfed with God we did not know what his attributes are. How is this possible? We decided that we would go on a quest for truth and thus this book begins…
A.W. Tozer, The Attributes of God: A Journey into the Father’s Heart, is what we have decided to do our study on. And although we are both apprehensive over the idea of really studying Tozer, we know that God is going to be throughout this book guiding us into knowing a true version of him.
Chapter one is “God’s Infinitude.” I found it odd that he would start with something so vast. The idea that we are searching to know more of him and he begins with we will never really know him. Tozer says his infinitude means, “All that God is, he is without bounds are limits.” I know, sounds simple enough huh. The problem is that we have oversimplified our God for way too long. Actually realizing his infinitude requires us to remove our “God in the Box” mentality. He can not be your “Santa Claus Jesus” that simply answers your every whim and still be the God of all knowledge and all power!
What I liked best about this chapter was after describing the infinity of God, Tozer then brings you into his pleasure in his creation. Once we get a grand view of God sometimes we can almost make him so big he seems distant and cold. I love that he is infinite and still personal! One of the study questions had me researching instances where singing occurred at major events. I thought I would start with a basic search of singing and then narrow down. One of the passages I found, really grabbed me.
Zeph 3:17
The LORD your God is with you,
he is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
he will quiet you with his love,
he will rejoice over you with singing.”
Now, I know I am getting a little off topic here but think about this. Our God is infinite and yet he is mighty to save, he is taking great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, and he will rejoice over you with singing! WOW! Think about this from something Tozer said..”God does not extend into space; God contains space.” From that Grand Vastness of God to singing over me. Oh how undeserving I am, how unworthy I am of such love.
Why do we have such a small view of such a Great God? I do not know, but this I do, that Christ would give me the eyes to see him in all his Majesty and Grandeur and that I would never put him in my box again. He is so much bigger than our denominational labels and our feeble minds can ever express.
Lord, May I seek to see you as a Infinite and yet Personal Savior and Lord. May I never try to place you lower than your stature and your position. May I forever be awed and amazed at amidst your vastness you took pleasure in redeeming me. Thank you for your quiet love, your mightiness to Save, and may I be so pleasing to you that you can sing over me.
